The Shifting Spiritual Landscape of America: Paganism on the Rise, Christianity in Decline

Writer: Anan RiveraAnan Rivera

The United States is experiencing a significant shift in religious affiliation, with a growing number of Americans identifying as Pagan or spiritual but not religious. Meanwhile, Christianity, long the dominant religion in the country, is experiencing a decline in adherents.

Christianity has played a significant role in the history of the United States, as it was introduced to North America by European colonizers and settlers. The majority of the U.S. population, approximately 85%, is affiliated with a religious tradition, with Christianity being the largest religion in America. Many of the original thirteen colonies were founded by religious groups, and religion has contributed to the nation's social fabric, politics, economics, and education. Christianity has also played a significant role in the founding of some colonies, as many colonists came to escape religious persecution. Unfortunately, some forget that. The Occult Arts has always captured the interest of Americans. If we are honest with ourselves, The United States has been an active participant in incorporating Occult elements like Theosophy, Kabbala, and yes every single indigenous practice that; as Europe colonized and forced assimilation on others they would appropriate their spirituality to sell it back to the High Society’s Elite for profit. Very little has changed. But I digress.

There are several reasons why Americans are increasingly identifying with paganism:

1. Dissatisfaction with mainstream religion: Some people are seeking alternative spiritual paths due to disillusionment with traditional Christianity or other organized religions. The advent of the internet has facilitated the influx of information and deconstruction spaces. We are talking about it. Everyday.

2. Growing interest in nature-based spirituality: Paganism's emphasis on nature, the environment, and the cycles of life resonates with those concerned about the planet's well-being. Through social media, the world has become smaller. More real once we realized we (Americans) are not the center of the world nor the only culture to study. People are tired of the concrete jungle. We need to connect desperately.

3. Desire for personal autonomy and self-expression: Paganism offers a flexible, individualized approach to spirituality, appealing to those seeking a more personalized connection with the divine. We are tired of conforming to a program that destroys our souls and contaminates the future.

4. Exploration of cultural heritage: Some individuals are reconnecting with their ancestral roots, exploring pagan traditions from their family's cultural history. This is important. How many Cherokee princesses, there are in your family lineage? We have been lying to ourselves about our heritage and why we are here in the first place. The disconnect from our roots prevents us from knowing our history. No one can tell you who you are, but is your responsibility to find out and honor that.

5. Increased visibility and acceptance: Paganism is becoming more mainstream, with greater media representation and social acceptance, making it easier for people to openly identify as pagan. Let’s be real most people have dabbled or outright studied occultism. Either to satisfy a deep-seated curiosity or, like most individuals in Christian groups, criticize what you did once upon a time at a pajama party with a board game.

6. Spiritual seeking and exploration: The internet and social media have made it easier for people to discover and explore various spiritual paths, including paganism. Anyone under the age of 60 has been or is in a group or chat that discusses a huge array of mystical and spiritual content. If you believe in Angel numbers that is an occult practice.

7. Disillusionment with modern society: Paganism's emphasis on community, simplicity, and a connection with nature may appeal to those seeking an alternative to modern society's fast pace and materialism. Capitalism has sucked the life of our spiritual practices. Even tho paganism is one of the most saturated markets for the sale and procurement of crystals and witchy stuff.

8. Feminist and LGBTQ+ inclusivity: Paganism's focus on the divine feminine and gender fluidity resonates with those seeking a more inclusive spiritual environment. It’s about time the West understands that spirituality is not dualistic. Most non-Abrahamic religions have more than one aspect of a deity. Especially earth-based and feminine-based practices. We all want to connect not isolate ourselves.

9. Personal transformation and empowerment: Paganism's emphasis on personal growth, magic, and self-empowerment appeals to those seeking a more active role in their spiritual journey. Most of us can recognize this is a spillover from prosperity gospel doctrines. That traumatizes individuals to feel powerless; and restricts evolution as a maturing individual.

10. Cultural and artistic expression: Paganism's rich symbolism, rituals, and art inspire creative expression and connection with the divine. I am in love with the many aspects of soul searching through art. The list of content creators in the spiritual community that share their works of art (whatever the medium) is a true privilege. They heal us through music, painting, and writing their prayers and spells. Express yourself.

These factors contribute to the growing interest in paganism, as Americans seek a more meaningful, inclusive, and personalized spiritual connection.

According to a recent Pew Research Center survey:

- 1.5 million Americans identify as Pagan or Wiccan, a significant increase from 2008.

- 27% of Americans ages 18-29 identify as spiritual but not religious.

- Christianity has declined by 7.8% since 2007, with mainline Protestantism experiencing the steepest decline.

This shift is reflected in the growth of spirituality hubs across the country. Examples include:

- The Pagan Federation of the United States, which has seen a surge in membership and local chapters.

- The Festival of Faiths in Louisville, Kentucky, which celebrates interfaith dialogue and spiritual diversity.

- The Sacred Circle Spiritual Center in Seattle, Washington, which offers workshops and rituals for Pagans and spiritual seekers.

- The Goddess Spirit Rising conference in Wisconsin, which celebrates feminine spirituality and empowerment.

These statistics and examples illustrate a profound transformation in American spirituality, as people seek more inclusive, nature-based, and personalized spiritual practices. As the country becomes more religiously diverse, it's essential to understand and respect these shifting beliefs and traditions. By having these conversations we learn how diverse spirituality is. It also helps us recognize con men and cults for what they are systems of control. Finding the space and people that nurture your soul and arm you with the tools to critically think by yourself is priceless and the best gift you can give yourself and future generations. Because to learn and respect others' spirituality . By also recognizing the conspiracy theories that prevent us from critically thinking about the world we live in.

Let's embrace this new spiritual landscape and foster a culture of understanding and acceptance!
