Surviving the Spotlight You Never Asked For

I never auditioned for this. But somehow, the light found me. Not the warm kind. Not the kind that nourishes. The kind that interrogates.

You know the one. The kind they shine on poor people, brown people, fat bodies, disabled ones. That forensic beam that turns your life into evidence before you’ve even had a chance to explain it.

It starts early. Before you know what performance is.

Do you smile too little?

“Unfriendly.”

Too much?

“Too eager.”

You speak up?

“Difficult.”

You stay silent?

“Suspicious.”

Every version of you becomes someone else's storyline.

Hypervisibility is not visibility. It is a distortion.

They see you, yes, but only through a funhouse mirror built by white papers, pity campaigns, and poverty porn. You become a symbol,a threat, a case study, never simply a person.

And while the cameras roll and the questions fly:

"How do you stay so strong?"

"Why don’t you just get a job?"

"Have you tried yoga or manifesting better outcomes?"

You’re just trying to remember if you left the stove on. If the cat has food. If you took your meds.If you even exist when the spotlight blinks off.

They don’t want your truth. MisunderstoodAndMighty

And if you dare resist that script, If you say “No,” or “That’s not who I am,” or worse, “You’re hurting me”, the spotlight becomes a weapon. Suddenly, you’re “angry.” “Ungrateful.” “Uncooperative.”The audience boos. The mic cuts out.

I have survived that stage.Barefoot.Burned out. Dragging my story like a sack of bones too sacred for this circus.

But here’s what no one tells you: You can walk off .

You can leave the light behind and build a room where your voice isn't edited. Where you don’t have to perform pain to be real.

And if you still have to stand under that spotlight, because sometimes you do, out of necessity or defiance, then stand how you need to. Stumble if you must. Speak in your dialect. Glare back
